Safety in Sports - Protect Your Eyes!

From basketball to baseball, and from swimming to skiing, there is a risk of eye injury. But in all sports and activity the risk of injury can be greatly reduced by simply using protective eyewear. For Sports Eye Safety Month, Friends for Sight urges you and your family to use proper eye protection while participating in sports and other physical activity.

The Facts

  • More than 40,000 sports-related eye injuries require emergency room attention each year in the U.S.
  • Approximately 13,500 sports-related eye injuries result in a permanent loss of sight.
  • Approximately 72% of injuries occur in people younger than 25, and about 43% occur in children younger than 15.
  • The leading cause of blindness in children is eye injury.
